Understanding flavours in baits
Flavours have been used in the production of fishing baits for over 50+ years. Understanding the different flavours currently available is an essential factor in producing a quality fishing bait, choosing the one that sits well with the base mix of your choice and the liquid food you intend to use.
The point to remember with all flavours is remembering exactly that, they are to add flavour to your finished bait, if a bait is overpowering in aroma, the chances are the flavour level in the bait is too high, which will leave a bitter taste and act as a deterrent rather than attractor.
All our flavours have been manufactured for Nutrabaits, from many different trusted flavour manufacturers worldwide, who work hand in hand with ourselves to give you the highest quality currently available.
We see posts on social media on a regular basis about the cost of flavours and lower costs flavours can be found, but be careful what you use in your baits. Unfortunately social media / forums are full of so called bait experts with little to no knowledge of producing a quality fishing bait.
One other huge point to mention, there are many grades of flavour available on the market. Many flavours available haven’t been manufactured for being edible, but have been designed for use in the e-cigarettes industry or for aroma only. These tend to be lower cost, it’s the edible flavours you need for your baits which unfortunately come at a premium cost.
Why take the gamble of purchasing your flavours off the net! stick with reputable flavours from reputable manufacturers that have been manufactured for the use in both human food and carp baits.
Saving a few pounds may sound great but this is usually for a reason, don’t waste your precious time out on the bank. Before choosing a flavour, give it a simple taste test, simply dab a tiny amount on your finger and put on your tongue and leave for a few seconds. You will be amazed how many flavours currently available on the carp fishing market give a chemical and bitter after taste. Some almost rancid, not what you want in your finished bait.
The choice is yours, but is saving a couple of pounds worth the chance of spoiling all your hard work ?
Creating your finished recipe!
Getting the correct flavour levels in your bait is vitally important, too little and it will be lost in the bait. Too much and the chances you will overpower the food signal of your chosen base mix / liquid food combinations and in turn leave your finished bait less effective.
Remember; taste over aroma every time.
A simple test: do several 1 egg mixes first, with all the ingredients you intend to use over the coming months. Each one with slightly different flavour levels and complete by either boiling / steaming. Leave to dry and then select the one that suits your angling the best.
We have many popular recipes from over the years in our base mix section, giving you a starting point or ideas to get you started on your journey.
